Wagner sat for the German painter Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) during his visit to London, on 25 May 1875; the resulting gouache vanished in 1945.  Like Dannreuther, he was a German resident in London. Dannreuther's book Richard Wagner: his tendencies and theories was published in 1873.
