Mendelssohn composed his famous concert overture, inspired by Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, when he was only seventeen years of age.  He sent a manuscript full score of the overture to Sir George Smart in 1829 and published it in 1832 as his op.21.  The rest of Mendelssohn's incidental music to the play dates from 1843.
