The dedicatee, Sofie Bassermann (1866-1943), was the wife of August Bassermann, Intendant of the Nationaltheater in Mannheim. Mahler visited Mannheim at the end of January 1904 to see Pfitzner's opera Die Rose vom Liebesgarten.
