Condition

The work consists of three boards adhered together. The joins are visible running horizontally the width of the work towards the upper and lower edges. There are two vertical cracks to the main board, one in the upper right quadrant and one in the lower left quadrant, with corresponding more minor cracks at the upper left and lower right quadrants. The board bows slightly. There is a fleck of loss at the upper left towards the left corner with one or two probable instances elsewhere. There are one or two flattened impasto tips. There is a very fine craquelure in the lower left quadrant, and possibly further more minor instances elsewhere. There is light surface dirt and a thick layer of varnish. This excepting, the work appears to be in good overall condition. The layer of varnish makes for a difficult reading under ultraviolet light. The work is held in a painted wooden slip and a stained wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
