Condition

There is wear and discolouration to the patina possibly due to placement outdoors. Minor casting flaws, light scratches and small losses are visible throughout. Most notably, there is a 1 inch surface loss between the legs. The bronze has been cast in sections and the joints are slightly visible, particularly on the figures arms. As viewed.

"The idea of the composition first occurred to me from a rocking chair. I have tried to create the same swinging, semi-circular movement in the sculpture. In order to get the maximum effect of rhythmic lines I have taken the liberty in shaping the legs and the thighs of the mother in masses and her breasts in such a way that they do not disturb the main schematic values of line and rhythm. The fluid momentum of the spirit of rocking is intended to echo through the gliding planes and undulating modelling of the figures." (P. Das Gupta quoted in K. Das Gupta, My Sculpture: Prodosh Das Gupta, Oxford Book & Stationery Co., Calcutta and New Delhi, 1955, p. 26)
