來源

Acquired in India by a British doctor volunteering in the Indian Army, circa 1945
Thence by descent The previous owner qualified as a doctor in 1933 from Manchester University. After the odd junior hospital appointments he obtained the MRCOG (Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) and also a Diploma in Public Health (DPH). By this time WWII had started, and in late 1941 he volunteered for a vacancy in the Indian Army as a doctor. He sailed on a troop ship, round Africa to India where he spent the next five years. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the Army School of Field Hygiene based in Lucknow. Foreseeing problems from the impending partition, rather than bringing his family to India to continue what could have been a very good career in the army there, he returned home to civilian life and Public Health work in the UK. He brought with him many Indian artifacts, including this current painting. He later gifted the work to his son who has had it for several decades.

Condition

There is craquelure present throughout, most notably in the areas of thicker paint. There are also small accretions in the top left hand corner. There are minor losses and undulations throughout as well as along the edges of the work. The paper has also yellowed due to age. As viewed.
