This stand has been presented in 1854 to Napoleon Parandier, Chief Engineer by the inhabitants of the Doubs valley (Franche-Comté, Eastern France).
N. Parandier, born in Arbois (Jura) on 14th April 1804, entered Ecole Polytechnique in 1823. He became member of Parliament from 1845 to 1846. He became ingénieur ordinaire du Doubs, and then was in charge of the Doubs river canalisation. Elected first class engineer in 1839, he was in charge of the rail-way from Dijon to Châlons. At the Parliament, he supported the rail-way new itininery from Dijon to Mulhouse through the Doubs valley instead of the Ognon valley. He realized this project in 1853. He finally received as Commander of the Légion d'Honneur on 9th March 1874.
This coupe is an allegory for the Doubs river, French and Swiss, which flows in top the Rhone through the Saone river.

The designer of this magnificent stand, Charles-François Rossigneux (1818-1907), was given the Légion d'Honneur for this piece and has been compared to Benvenuto Cellini at the time, see Musée des Familles : lectures du soir (p. 71): Le programme donné par les souscripteurs à l'artiste était celui-ci: "En haut la source, en bas le cours du fleuve ; le rail-way, l'enfermant de sa ceinture, sillonne la vallée et jette sur son passage rapide la prospérité et l'abondance." Par un tour de force charmant, M. Rossigneux a fait tenir ce vaste sujet dans une simple coupe. Rossigneux whose pieces had been noticed during the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1844, was named architect and commissaire-adjoint for the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1855. He then worked closely with Christofle firm.
