Structurally sound. There are one or two instances of glaze loss to the rim and upper area of the piece, as is common with low-fired pieces by Cardew, as well as to the edges of the handles. There is a small glaze firing defect to the lower part of the front. There is a light crackle to the clear earthenware glaze, in keeping with the nature of the artist's materials. In 1923 Cardew became the first apprentice to Bernard Leach at his pottery, founded in 1920 in St Ives. He left in 1926 to establish his own pottery at Winchcombe in Gloucestershire.
