Jack B. Yeats’s career began as an illustrator and his early work consists of lively, figurative animations and his watercolours are a significant part of his oeuvre. The characters are often portrayed in a heroic manner, inspired by his reading of popular stories and the mythical heroes of folk life and ballads.

Yeats held a longstanding fascination for the sea. As a child he grew up in Sligo, a small town on the edge of the Atlantic, populated by seafaring adventurers. The present work depicts one such character, whose heavily set features and strong gaze masterfully evoke a lifetime of memories that this ancient mariner has spent on the sea.
