This portrait of the sculptor, painter and stained glass artist Patrick Pye (1929-2018) was most likely to have been completed around 1950, when Pye rented a shared studio in Dublin from Patrick Swift. Portraiture evidently dominated a large part of Swift’s artistic career and this particular portrayal of Pye offers a personal and honest representation of his friend. Using a cool and austere colour palette this intimate and truthful painting exemplifies the artist’s figurative approach towards his subject. Swift’s predominant aim in his work throughout his life time was to produce a faithful representation of the real world as well as a psychological and emotive insight towards his experience of the subject as an artist.
