Condition

Executed on fibrous cream wove paper, not laid down and attached to the backing board with tape in three places at the centre of the upper edge. There are a few spots of foxing to the sheet, to the background and to the sitter's neck. The sheet is very gently undulating. Otherwise this work is in very good condition.

拍品資料及來源

Marie-Berthe Aurenche (1905-1960), sister of screenwriter Jean Aurenche, was a French painter. In 1927, the year after the present work was executed, she married the artist Max Ernst, and was immersed in the Surrealist set, becoming firm friends with Man Ray and Lee Miller. Divorcing Ernst in 1936, she became Chaim Soutine's mistress until his death in 1943; they are buried together in Montparnasse.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Sylvie Buisson.
