Condition

CASE Case in overall good condition with light surfaces scratches and wear consistent with occasional use and age. In our view, the case may have seen one very light sympathetic polishing in its past, however, still retains strong bevels and thick lugs. The bracelet has scuffs and scratches throughout from wear. DIAL Dial in overall good condition, with cracking and loss of the finishing from age and wear. There is a circular presence from where the hand and lacquer have rubbed up against eachother, however, it does not affect the printing on the dial. Some very light debris found throughout. MOVEMENT The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. All dimensions in catalogue descriptions are approximate. Condition reports may not specify mechanical replacements or imperfections to the movement, case, dial, pendulum, separate base(s) or dome. The case back is engraved America's Cup Constellation 1964 D.P.B. Jr, engraved for the recipient.

The America's Cup race is one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in the world.  Founded in 1851, the Cup was originally presented to the winning yacht in a race around the Isle of Wright in England.  After an American team won, the Cup was awarded to the New York Yacht Club.  This has started a long and distinguished tradition of teams from around the world  racing to defend or challenge for possession of the Cup.

The Constellation was the US defender ship in the 1964 America's Cup held in Newport, Rhode Island and defeated the Sovereign 4-0. This was presented to the crew members of The Constellation prior to the their victory over the Sovereign at the start of the 1964 America's Cup.

Indeed the present lot was personally engraved for Daniel Putnam Brown, Jr. a team member who sailed the Constellation to victory in 1964.

Within the Submariner family, the Reference 5513 stands as a highly important early model, and remains one of the longest Rolex references in production, for nearly 30 years. The present gilt dial is striking, with two lines of type to note the depth rating and model.  This exemplary piece also has all of the hallmarks of a classic Ref. 5513, with its pointed crown guards and "meters first" depth rating.

The present lot also bears a thin underline below the signature. This detail, only included in watches from 1963 and 1964, marks the transition from using radium to using tritium as the luminous material on the dials.
