Condition

In overall very good condition with surface dirt, particularly in the crevices, consistent with age and handling. The whole surface is covered with a white paint that could possibly hid old restorations. There are a few minor chips to the high points and along the edges of the base consistent with age and handling as well. A fine vertical fissure is visible at the junction between the bust and the base, with a vertical fine fissure running through the back of the base.

Catalogue Note

Elève d'Edme Dumont, Louis-Philippe Mouchy, Guillaume Coustou et Augustin Pajou, Louis Pierre Deseine eut pour mécène le Prince de Condé et demeura fidèle aux Bourbons pendant la Révolution. Après avoir présidé la séance du Jeu de Paume et avoir été nommé maire de Paris, Bailly perdit les faveurs du peuple en dispersant les rassemblements contre le roi. "Tu trembles Bailly - Oui, mais c'est de froid", telle fut la réponse de Bailly à son bourreau lors de son exécution en 1793. Un plâtre de ce modèle fut exposé au Salon de 1789 (Angers, musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. n° MBA 848), un autre plâtre se trouve à Versailles, au musée Lambinet (inv. n° 778), et un autre à Paris, au musée Carnavalet.
