  • Height (overall) 33 cm, 13 in.; length (terracotta) 42 cm, 16 1/2 in.

Condition

Very good condition overall with minor chips to the edges and the high points at some places. There is some surface dirt, consistent with age and handling, and small darker spots visible to Bacchus's back and on the barrel (probably projections of a varnish). A fragment to the back of the left side of the terracotta as been reattached with a break visible in front of Bacchus's proper right foot. Chips and minor losses are visible along the edges of the wooden base, consistent with age and handling.

A bronze of the same model and its pendant, Reclining Bacchus, are in the Louvre museum (from the collection of Adolphe Thiers, inv. nos. TH 97 & TH 98). Another pair of bronzes is in the Chancellerie des universités de Paris. A terracotta of the same model was in the collection of Karl Lagerfeld (his sale, Christie's Monaco, 29 April 2000, Lot 218), another was sold by Christie's London, 9 December 2010, Lot 278.
