A rare work on the Białowieża Forest, one of the last and largest remaining parts of the primeval woodland that once stretched across the European Plain. A hunting reserve since the sixteenth century, the last indigenous herd of European bison survived in this forest, carefully preserved by the Emperor Alexander II from 1860. The strain survived until the last war in the Tatra properties of Prince Hohenlohe-Pless, and until now in the Duke of Bedford's park at Woburn.
