Generally considered to be the first geological map of the United States, Maclure's map is colored according to Abraham Gottlob Werner classification of the earth's five formations: primitive rocks, transition rocks, secondary rocks, alluvial rocks, and old red sand stone. The map also indicates a "A line to the westward of which has been found the greatest part of the Salt & Gypsum."

The map was published in Transactions of the American Philosophical Society to accompany Maclure's paper "Observations on the Geology of the United States of North America; with Remarks on the probable Effects that may be produced by the Decomposition of the different Classes of Rocks on the Nature and Fertility of Soils."
