First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the editor on the front free endpaper of each volume, "Louisa Mason, from J. Watson Webb." The work is based on Stewart's sporting trips of 1832, 1838 and 1842.  It is widely believed, however, that Webb himself wrote it. Stewart, who first travelled to America in 1832, was a Scottish adventurer and British military officer. His travels through the West were extensive, and he was often accompanied by a large entourage. His final journey in 1842 took the form of a Renaissance pleasure trip, and after ending in scandal, Stewart left what is now Fremont Lake for Scotland, and never returned to America.
