William Ilbery was active in London from 1780 until his death in approximately 1839. He is best known for the production of luxury watches for the Chinese Market and arguably set the new fashion for all watches made for the Asian Market, a style also synonymous with the illustrious makers, Bovet and Juvet. These are immediately recognisable with their elaborately engraved movements with free-standing barrels. William Anthony, over a decade Ilbery's senior, produced watches in a very similar manner and his work clearly had a great influence on Ilbery's creations.
