Of hinged design, set to the front with a line of slightly graduated old European-cut diamonds, total gross weight approximately 20 dwts, internal circumference 6¼ inches.

Condition

In good overall condition, the mounting with surface scratches commensurate with wear. One bangle's clasp is slightly difficult to open; this same bangle has a small fracture in the gold beneath the diamonds 6th and 7th from the clasp, which may benefit from the attention of a jeweler. Mounting tests as 14 karat gold. Each bangle with approximately 4.00 carats of diamonds, on one bracelet the diamonds are approximately G-H color, predominantly SI clarity with a few I clarity examples, on the other they are approximately H-I color, predominantly VS-SI clarity. Clasps close securely and are fitted with safety catches.

Famed singer and actress Lena Horne was a trailblazer in the entertainment industry for over fifty years between the 1940s and 1990s. She achieved fame at a young age, beginning in the nightclub circuit at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem and quickly became a vocal sensation on both Broadway and later, in film, where she ultimately signed a long-term contract with MGM, a tremendous achievement in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s, where white actors were favored. Throughout her life, she used her fame as a platform to champion civil rights and bring awareness to the mistreatment of black soldiers in the military and the inequality black performers faced in the film, theatre and music industries. Sotheby’s is pleased to offer these diamond bracelets which belonged to Ms. Horne.
