Condition

Intaglio signed Marchant in reverse. Agate brown, translucent, with typical banded structure visible. Intaglio in good condition, some extremely minor chips and scratches to stone surface. Light scratches to metal surface consistent with wear. Overall in good condition. Intaglio measuring approximately 28 x 21mm, gross weight approximately 13 grams.

Nathaniel Marchant RA (1739-1816) was a noted English engraver of cameos, intaglios and medals, and held a number of prestigious appointments, including assistant engraver to the mint, gem sculptor to the Prince of Wales, engraver to the King, and engraver to the stamp office.
