"I would like to thank you very much for your dear birthday wishes! If only a part of it was fulfilled - I would be deeply thankful. Today is a day. The sirens on the Hudson are screaming. The bells of the churches are ringing! How did we all long for this day! Now it is there. And the heart trembles again." This poignant letter was written on Victory Day in Europe.
