Our table was reviewed by Alvar Gonzáles-Palacios in his study Il gusto dei principi. Arte di corte del XVIIe del XVIII secolo (Milan, 1993, vol. 1, p. 336, vol. 2, p. 297, fig. 592). The essay entitled « Un mistero veneziano » establishes in the first instance a relation between a group of several tables and caskets and an anonymous workshop. Then, the present table is described: unlike the first group mainly inspired by Islamic patterns, its decoration is much more European and directly influenced by Renaissance features such as leave scrolls, grotesque masks and Antiquity profiles in medallions, suggesting perhaps northern engravings as models.
Among the most outstanding Italian trestle tables, let’s note the one sold in « Treasures » sale, Sotheby's, London, 6 July 2010, lot 4, from the former collection of Francesco Maria II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino (1549-1631).
