Condition
The thick coarse canvas has been strip-lined along its four edges and it appears the back has been painted, possibly by the artist himself before turning to the main composition. There are some scattered lines of hairline craquelure, as visible from the catalogue illustration. Ultra-violet light reveals strokes of retouching along the right and left framing edges and extensive areas of fluorescence in the main figure's body. However, due to the masking varnish, it is hard to establish whether this is attributable to retouching. Overall, this work presents well and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
