Manuel Neri is an American artist known for his figurative sculpture, associated closely with the Bay Area Figurative Movement, which included artists in Northern California who abandoned the prevalent Abstract Expressionist movement for figuration in the 1950s and 60s. Neri began his career sculpting with repurposed material and moved to sculpting with plaster. His sculptures focus on the forms of women, sculpted in plaster, cast in bronze and painted with brightly colored paint. The present work follows in this style and features the elongated form of a woman, highlighted with blue paint. Neri’s work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hirshorn Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
