Gene Davis was a central figure in the Washington Color School, a group of painters focused on exploring the relationship between bold colors. In 1972, Davis took his vision to a new scale by creating 'Franklin’s Footpath,' painting his signature bands of color on the street in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1979, Davis embarked on a similar project, 'Niagra ‘79,' that the present work is a study for. In this iteration of his outdoor paintings, the artist hand rolled sixty, 2-foot wide by 364-foot long lines across the parking lot of Arpark, a not-for-profit public park and art space still active in Lewiston, NY. At 43,000 square feet, the work was heralded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest painting in the world at the time.
