Peter Dean was a figurative and abstract artist who was concerned with depicting the socio-political climate of the 60s and 70s. His art is apocalyptic with sometimes violent undertones, which is a stark contrast from the cool and analytic art of the time, such as Minimalism and Pop. Dean was born in 1934 Berlin to Jewish parents, and immigrated to New York to flee the Holocaust. In 1969 Dean co-founded Rhino Horn, an artist group which produced socially critical art. Dean’s art is featured in many important collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin, and the National Gallery of Art D.C.
