Rio de Janeiro based artist Beatriz Milhazes’ abstracted scenes are based on the natural world. Milhazes, who was heavily influenced by Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and Tarsila do Amaral, has an original multi-layered art making technique. Milhazes composes her paintings on plastic sheets and transfers them to canvas or paper. This process, which ultimately creates textureless rendering, completes Milhazes’ goal of producing paintings that exclude the hand of artist. Milhazes paper collages implement various media in addition to paper, such as paint, candy wrappers, found graphic papers, and leaves.
