Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along edges, including minor hairline craquelure at the pull margins. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. Under raking light, hairline craquelure is visible in both figures’ pink and white painted hair in the upper center and upper right corner. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, scattered pinpoint spots in both figures’ faces and hair fluoresce darkly and appear to have benefitted from light retouching and the aforementioned craquelure appears to have been consolidated.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

"If you keep looking, you find out everything about the person. It’s all there. But it’s not the first thing you see in the painting. There is a lot of human content in the pictures, and I do think that all my paintings are done from a certain social standpoint. Some people are poor, some are rich, some are old, some are young – but that’s
not the prime issue. That’s what I don’t like about Rembrandts: they tell you too much about the person, rather than showing you the person."
