Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate although the paper tone is slightly cooler in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Each sheet is hinged verso to the backing board in numerous places and undulates slightly, which is in keeping with the artist's choice of medium. All four edges of each sheet are deckled. Extremely close inspection reveals an extremely short and unobtrusive tear to the upper centre of the extreme right hand edge of the left hand sheet, and a very faint crease to the upper centre of the extreme right hand edge of the right hand sheet.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

"It’s what people want from black artists. We’re the voodoo king, the voodoo queen, the witch doctor, the drug dealer, the magicien de la terre. The exotic, the decorative. I’m giving them all of that, but it’s packaged slightly differently". (Chris Ofili cited in: Exh. Cat., Minneapolis, Walker Art Center, Brilliant! New Art from London, 1996, p. 67).
