Condition

Colour: The colour in the catalogue illustration is fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly cooler in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Close inspection reveals a few superficial scuffs to the artist's frame and the Plexiglas. Further close inspection reveals a few minute spots of yellow paint, which look to be inherent to the artist working process. Extremely close inspection under raking light reveals a few minute and faint rubmarks towards the bottom right and bottom left hand corners of the larger element. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultra-violet light.

"For most of us photography stands for the truth, but a good artist can make a harder truth by manipulating forms or pushing paint around. It fascinates me how I can manipulate the truth so easily by the way I juxtapose opposites or crop the image or take it out of context. When two forces contend in a photograph, I may favour one side or the other – the rider or the horse, for example, the upright mummy in its coffin or the woman standing in awe next to it" (John Baldessari cited in: Coosje van Bruggen, John Baldessari, New York 1990, p. 56).
