The nozzle, lower section of the term and base of the present pair of candlesticks are taken from a design for a silver ‘lyon-faced’ candlestick from Matthew Boulton and John Fothergill’s Pattern Book I, p. 41, which probably dates to the 1770s[1].

A set of four of the same model, catalogued as French or English, sold Sotheby’s London, Important French Furniture and Clocks, 15 June 1990, lot 71 (£64,000)[2].
