Condition

Overall measurements: 194cm across the top, 195cm across the bottom, 276cm up the left side, 278cm up the right side. With panel of linen on reverse. Velcro attached across the top for hanging purposes. This tapestry panel is a composite of three joined sections, with the vertical joins running up on the left and right side of the group of figures. The lower section of balustrade and flowers is a 19th century section, including the small spheres at the top of the steps, and the attachment is visible around these motifs. The border is also cut and joined, with the joins visible in the corners, and half way down the right hand side. There are some repairs in other areas, for example around the parrot in the centre. The light coloured silks are distressed in areas, due to age. There are two small horizontal minor splits where border joins the fragmentary panel, in the top left and right corners. Decorative panel, of versatile size. From well known series, of which the originals are very large. Charming subject matter.

拍品資料及來源

This tapestry is from a distinctive series of Beauvais tapestries, known after 1850 as Les Grotesques de Berain, and depicting exotic animals and figures in architectural settings. The set of `Grotesques ' consisted of six panels designed by Jean Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699); with small figures after Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), from inspired by literary sources, such as Commedia dell'Arte . The panels depict `Grotesques with a Camel', `Grotesques with an Elephant', `Grotesques with Animal Tamers', `Grotesques with the Offering to Priapus',`Grotesques with Musicians' and `Grotesques with statue of Pan'. From the mid 19th century onwards the series was often referred to as the `Berain Grotesques' , after engravings of grotesques by Berain I (1640-1711), of classical grotteschi inspiration, but Berain did not design this particular series. `The Grotesques', had a distinctive yellow (à fond jaune ou tabac d'Espagne ) ground, and there were various border types used. It was woven by the Manufacture Royale de Beauvais between 1688 and 1732, initially under the directorship of Philippe Behagle (1641-1705) and then his son of the same name.

Another from this same series and border type, see Sotheby's, 30 May 1997, lot 20; Provenance: Property of Baron von Stumm, formerly in the Schloss Rauischholzhausen. Another entrefenêtre (331 by 188cm), depicting two male musicians, within  see Sotheby's New York, 13 December 2003, lot 46.
