Théodore Géricault visited his friend Pierre-Joseph-Dedreux-Dorcy (1788-1834) in Rome, the latter having won the Prize of Rome in 1815 for an architectural project. A few years later, Géricault painted the portrait of Elisabeth De Dreux (1812-1846), Pierre-Joseoph Dedreux-Dorcy’s niece, presented here. This painting matches the portrait of Alfred De Dreux, Elisabeth’s brother, painted around 1819 and kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see the illustration below). Another painting from the same period, kept today in a private collection, depicts the brother and sister together.
