風、水、土、火逐一捲入洶湧澎湃的漩渦之中──《144號》乃朱德群作於二十世紀六十年代破格創新的典型傑作。本作意境玄妙,發人深思,從中心軸線傾彩而出,由色彩與紋理構成浩瀚無垠的漩渦形波浪和地貌,被頂部和底部的白熾光芒環繞。《144號》作於一九六三年,正值藝術家於六十年代初經歷重要轉變的高峰時期──在此期間,五十年代作品中獨立分明的幾何圖形和黑色筆觸,轉化為流動的抽象風景,同時他之前以啞黑色和褐色系為主的用色演變成燦爛奪目的色彩。在《144號》前駐足欣賞,鮮紅色、深藍色和鈷藍色從無邊無際的炭黑色帷幔向外滲透,觀者恰如一名走向地球中心的朝聖者,穿過畫面,見證著焦石被爆發火光和熔岩的岩縫徹底分裂的壯觀時刻。與具備類似用色但不同色調濃淡的《140號》及《143號》相比,本作在色彩和紋理方面呈現出最為精細微妙的構圖。最引人注目的是青綠色的柔和光暈,其超凡脫俗的光芒籠罩著畫面;《144號》呈現低調卻引人入勝的光彩,是抽象藝術大師朱德群以光為題的首批實驗性作品之一,並為他在一九七〇年之後作品中的光影處理手法開創先河。

六十年代初是朱德群漫長輝煌的一生中最重要的時期。五十年代中期抵達巴黎後不久,朱德群從法國國立現代藝術館舉辦的俄羅斯裔法國抽象藝術家尼古拉·德·斯塔埃爾回顧展受到啟發,於是決定不再創作具象繪畫。隨後短短幾年間,朱德群別具一格的抒情抽象風格在巴黎藝壇一鳴驚人。一九五八年,朱德群首度在歐洲舉辦個展,並於一九六〇年與勒讓德爾畫廊簽訂一份為期六年的獨家代理合約,當時畫廊由莫里斯∙巴尼耶掌舵,他是一名眼光獨到的畫廊經紀人,曾發掘瓦西里·康丁斯基與德·斯塔埃爾等傑出藝術家。當時,藝評家稱朱德群是具開創性又獨樹一幟的藝術家,其視野及技巧融合東西方的元素,從而創造出卓爾不群的普世美學,在同代西方抽象藝術家當中脫穎而出;哈蘭姆堡(Lydia Harambourg)即言:「西方畫家畫的只是景色,而東方畫家則與宇宙合而為一。朱德群的繪畫中,那先於光線所引出的形式、色彩的沉思默想與宇宙渾然成為一體,經過在巴黎長達半世紀的創作之後,他已是一位不容置疑的二十世紀繪畫藝術大師。」

朱德群最早在五十年代後半期便開始創作抽象繪畫,將風景簡化為圓柱形、圓錐形、球形和抽象線條,於畫作上合奏出一曲活力澎湃的交響樂。從五十末及六十年代初起,他的筆觸變得越來越大膽豪邁,在畫布上縱筆揮毫,快慢有致,渾然天成,而他以往獨立分明的幾何圖形則變成濃度與紋理不一的流動色彩,營造出與眾不同的層次和動感。朱德群在運用西方油彩的同時,其筆法與構圖則沿襲東方傳統書法技巧的嚴謹結構和精神:「線條」,即線的生命和氣韻──每一筆起承轉合與字跡本身同樣重要;「頓挫」,即藉由每個臂腕動作產生細微精準的提筆與按筆;最後是「俯仰」,即筆劃結構及分佈的整體平衡感。因此,朱德群的畫作重如泰山,亦輕如鴻毛,與靈巧的筆法融為一體,產生動人心魄的空間,在觀者面前有規律地躍動。畫面展現出一種抽象風景結合純粹無雜的氣氛、本質與詩意的崇高意境──與始於魏晉南北朝的中國文人傳統「詩畫合一」一脈相承,並將之發揚光大。

《144號》的縱向構圖進一步引用中國傳統立軸繪畫,令人聯想到古畫描摹的崇山峻嶺、荒涼峽谷和洶湧描摹瀑布,同樣喚起眩目神迷的壯觀意境。本作的縱向構圖與朱德群筆下粗獷的橫向筆觸平行並置,從而產生強烈的視覺效果──主要依賴與西方藝術中的傳統透視法背道而馳的構圖手法。然而,朱德群透過利用中國水墨畫的分層佈局,創造出獨一無二的空間。莫里斯∙巴尼耶評論道:「朱德群對空間的描繪有別於傳統;可以說他採用了多重空間[...]他的靈感通常源自風景或詩詞歌賦。」如皮埃爾∙卡巴納所言,朱德群創造的這個宇宙「不近,亦不遠,也沒有透視,它是深淵,是時間的喘息,是動態的詩,其形式好像來自精神的高度集中,為的是與觀眾的眼光對視。畫家不知道什麼是靜止,他身上的一切都處於運動之中,就像在描繪自然一隅的中國山水畫中,生命之氣吹動樹木,鑿山溢河,晴空使萬物合一歸於寧靜。在朱德群的繪畫中,深度浮上表面,對立趨向統一。」

一九六九年,朱德群在荷蘭倫勃朗故居博物館親身欣賞過倫勃朗(或譯林布蘭)的作品後,受啟迪而進一步以光為主題,延續其抽象藝術生涯;七十年代之後的後期作品更加著眼於戲劇性的明暗對比與巧妙的光影交錯,使大氣磅礡的構圖煥發內在的光彩──即如今被公認為標誌性的「朱德群」光影手法。值得注意的是,儘管《144號》的創作年份比朱德群與倫勃朗畫作的邂逅早了五年,但卻預示著朱德群處理光影的獨特手法,可見於環繞畫面頂部和底部的白熾光隙。《144號》散發著雅致微弱的餘光,燃亮這位抽象藝術大師的內在光芒,匯聚西方傳統的光影手法及天人合一的光輝,與大自然和宇宙萬象彼此連繫。《144號》為開創朱德群後期作品的劃時代之作,畫中浩瀚壯美的意象扣人心弦,向觀者呈現一片純粹凝結的奧秘宇宙。
