This is a rare image of a raja worshipping Devi, the Supreme Goddess, of whom all the goddesses of the Hindu pantheon are manifestations. Dr. Catherine Glynn and Karni Singh, curator at Jodhpur, have identified the raja in this miniature as probably Pratap Singh of Raoti (a thikhana of Ratlam) rather than Pratap Singh of Ghanerao. The same figures may appear in a procession scene of circa 1720 in the V&A (see Crill 1999, p.44, fig.44; and Topsfield and Beach 1991, pp.72-73, no.26).
