This painting is from a significant series of illustrations to the Rasikapriyya of Keshav Das. The well-known sixteenth-century text analyses the nature of romance by reference to situations involving Radha and Krishna. The series was painted at Kangra circa 1800-25 in oval format with distinctive floral spandrels. Others from the series are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and were discussed by W.G. Archer, Indian paintings from the Punjab Hills, London, 1973, vol.1, pp.305-7, vol.2, pp.228-230. Further examples have appeared at auction in these rooms 11 December 1968, lot 98; 16 October 1996, lots 105-108, 110; 23 April 1997, lots 158-9; and in our New York rooms 27 March 1991, lot 68, and 4 June 1994, lot 164.
