Condition

Good, intact, some glaze chips and areas of craquelure. Cantagalli symbol of rooster underside covered by felt. as viewed.

The model which served as inspiration to Cantagalli was most probably one in the Italian Royal collections, published in Deck 1887, p.26, fig.11. A jar of smaller scale, 31cm., shows the existence of this shape since the 1550s on Iznik (British Museum, inv. no.1878,1230.513). A similar example was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 22 April 2016, lot 426.
