Condition

Retains original sense of grandeur, but has undergone extensive restoration, notably consolidating the metal threads, many of which are loose or missing, patches of velvet also consolidate and re-stitched, some of which may be from other sections of textile or later added, as viewed.

As a favourite element of the Ottoman design repertoire from the early fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century, çintamani appear in multiple forms and variations. The current example, with alternating small and large groups of çintamani, is most closely related to an example in the Musées royaux d'art et d'histoire, Brussels, inv. no.792, attributed to the second half of the fifteenth century (see Atasoy, Denny, Mackie, Tazcan 2001, pp.298-299, fig.286). Another comparable example is illustrated in Tokatlian 2002, p.108 fig.2. An exceptionally large variation of this style was sold as part of the collection of Argine Benaki Salvago, 26 April 2017, lot 139.
