Condition

Excellent condition overall. Some small loss of wood and metal on the base which is consistent with ritual handling. The proper left ear is broken but very well patinated. Beautiful brown and nuanced patina.

Raoul Lehuard, dans son ouvrage Art Bakongo. Les centres de style (1989, p. 157-169), fut le premier à identifier le « style Dondo» de la vallée du Niari (Nord-Est du pays Kongo), à partir de deux œuvres documentées du Götesborg Etnografiska Museet, collectées dans la région en 1909 et 1910. Les œuvres des Dondo, Bwende et Sundi voisins partagent des caractéristiques communes, dont en particulier la scarification en losange gaufré ornant le front. Les premières se distinguent néanmoins par leur réalisme, magistralement transcrit dans le visage à l’expression concentrée de ce chasse-mouches. S'y ajoute la rare conservation de l’intégralité du regalia : bague en étain, queue de buffle et bande de coton.
