Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Very thin crack on the proper right shoulder and small loss to the wood at the back of the cup. Van Oosterom collection label at the bottom. Deep patina with remains of pigment in the hollow areas of the carving from its ritual use.

Présente sur les mortiers à bétel et sur les appuis-tête, l’iconographie de la figure féminine faisant office de cariatide est caractéristique de la région de l’embouchure du Sepik et du Ramu. Reflet des grandes cérémonies où les femmes portaient les bols de nourriture sur leur tête, ces œuvres sont très rares dans les collections. Celle-ci s’affirme par la volupté des attributs féminins, qui contraste avec la puissante expressivité du visage, aux traits profondément sculptés à l’outil de pierre. Le Museum für Völkerkunde de Munich possède un appui-tête offrant la même iconographie, acquis en 1915 par Max Buchner (inv. n° B 535).
