Condition
Good condition overall. One very thin crack running down the proper right side of the figure, from the top of the head to the leg. A second crack is on the proper left side of the base. Beautiful brown patina with encrustations at some place.

Selon Bernard de Grunne (Mains de Maîtres, 2001, p. 69), « au cours du XVIIIe siècle, Sakassou fut un centre politique et artistique très important pour la culture Baulé, à la suite de l'arrivée des Akan-Baulé. La chefferie la plus importante qu'ils instaurèrent était à Sakassou. Cette cour royale a probablement dû stimuler la création d'ateliers de grands sculpteurs de statues pour asseoir sa légitimité sur les populations locales proto-Baulé, utilisant donc les éléments religieux et culturels purement autochtones ». À l'élégance caractéristique du style de l'Atelier des Maîtres de Sakassou s'ajoute ici la patine, par endroits croûteuse, qui permet d’identifier cette statue à un asie usu - représentation dictée par le devin d'un "génie de la brousse" sous la forme d'un bel humain.
