Condition

Very good condition overall. Some little insect holes coherent with age and the type. Small loss to the proper left side of the headdress but well patinated. Wear consistent with use within the culture.

Miniature remarquable, cette statuette concentre toute la puissance de la sculpture Sepik. Le nez recourbé, signe de force masculine, la haute coiffe couverte de motifs claniques et les lignes anguleuses confèrent à la figure sa magistrale présence. S’ajoute la position intrigante des jambes repliées sur elles-mêmes, qui permettait à l’esprit de conserver l’intégralité de ses pouvoirs en évitant tout contact avec le sol (Friede, New Guinea Art, Masterpiece from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, vol. II, p. 94). Représentation d'un esprit mythologique - combinant des caractères anthropomorphes et zoomorphes -, cette statuette agissait comme charme protecteur. Propriété individuelle, elle portait chance à son propriétaire à la chasse comme à la guerre, mais aussi dans ses relations amoureuses.
