Lester Wolfe (1897-1983) acquired many of his Egyptian antiquities from his friend Charles Dikran Kelekian (1900-1982) in New York. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1919 with a degree in physics, and after World War II played an important role in containerized shipping between the United States and Japan. In addition to his ancient Egyptian art Lester Wolfe collected Asian and Islamic art, as well as important 20th Century Mexican paintings by such artists as Tamayo and Rivera. In 1975 Sotheby's New York sold his Islamic works of art in a sale devoted to his collection.
