The present work is an en grisaille study for Thomas Hart Benton's Open Country, a 1952 oil and tempera in the collection of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Executed in his characteristically sinuous style, Benton depicts a vast and arid landscape reminiscent of his travels in West Texas.

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by the Thomas Hart Benton Catalogue Raisonné Foundation. Committee Members: Dr. Henry Adams, Jessie Benton, Anthony Benton Gude, Andrew Thompson and Michael Owen.
