The present work was cast in an edition of five at the Harry Jackson Foundry in Campiore, Italy. Thomas Hart Benton initially explored the idea for Ten Pound Hammer in a 1965 pencil sketch based on the theme of the folk song "John Henry." He continued in 1965 with an oil on canvas of the same subject and a lithograph in 1967. Of Ten Pound Hammer, Benton remarked: "Old story of my youth—before the steam hammer beat out John Henry" (as quoted in Creekmore Faith, The Lithographs of Thomas Hart Benton, Austin, Texas, 1979, p. 178).
