Condition

The canvas is lined and the tacking edges are trimmed. There is fine scattered surface cracking throughout, particularly in the darker pigments. The work retains a discolored varnish. Under UV: there appears to be inpainting to address frame abrasion at the extreme edges.

This portrait in profile bears a strong resemblance to Joseph Stella’s Portrait of Samuel Putnam (n.d., Private collection). An American editor, publisher, and author, Putnam was a frequent contributor to The Chicago Tribune, Evening Post and publications such as the Daily Worker. He later gained widespread recognition as a prolific literary translator and an expert on the literature of Brazil.
