Condition

Watercolour on paper. The artists' sheet had been laid on canvas and securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. There are spots of paper loss along the four framing edges, covered by the frame, due to old nails touching the sheet. The artist's sheet has somewhat discoloured in time and colours have somewhat faded. There are brown marks along the four framing edges possibly from previous mounting. Overall, this work is ready to hang. Presented glazed, in a decorative gilt frame. Colours are brighter and the sky is more yellow in reality than in the catalogue illustration.

拍品資料及來源

Executed in 1909.

From his studio, Theodor Kittelsen looked straight across at the hills on the other side of the lake, Baaneberget, Norefjell and Eggedalsfjella. 'Many images and thoughts have wandered out from the small studio with the wooden beam ceiling', wrote Theodor Kittelsen. 'Lauvlia is beautifully situated - during the summer, there is a riot of colour here. Over the treetops one catches a glimpse of the calm blue lake, and the land on the other side, Baaneberget, shines. Further afar, on the horizon is Norefjeld and the blue Eggedals mountains with some shining white patches of snow. The white birch tree trunks shine and the soft leaves glitter from the sun.' (Theodor Kittelsen, quoted in Lauvlia exh. cat., pp. 16-19).
