Jean Marie Joseph Magrou studied under Injalbert and exhibited at the Paris Salon, where he received several medals for his work, including a gold medal in 1926. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. The present work, imbued with a severe classicism, is a bronze version of Magrou's Monument au génie latin, which was placed in the gardens of the Palais-Royal in 1921. It was later moved to Béziers, Magrou's hometown. The pedestal of the monument shows the Roman She-Wolf and has an inscription in Latin. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds a photograph of the monument in its original location (available at: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53067999n; last accessed 04/11/2018).
