Condition

Overall, the condition of the figure is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a slip to the surface which may conceal some condition points. The staff is made separately and is loose; it may be associated. There appears to be a reattachment to the proper right wrist. There are a few stable original fissures, notable to the proper left leg. There are minor lacunae, consistent with the casting, in particular behind the proper left hand. There appears to be a loss to the back right corner and there are a few chips around the edges at the bottom. There are remnants of a darker patination in areas. There are very minor chips and abrasions, including to the proper left index finger. Parts of the legs seem to have been modelled separately, with joints slightly open but stable.

拍品資料及來源

Famous for his sumptuous nude bacchantes, Carrier-Belleuse was also a brilliant portraitist. Of his historical portraits, the Rousseau is one of the most engaging, depicting the philosopher in a moment of introspection, admiring a flower. The present sculpture appears to be an original plaster sketch by Carrier, which is supported by interior metal struts only seen in X-Rays.
