Condition

Overall, the condition of the marbles is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few minor losses, including to some of the leaves in the flower garland held by one of the putti. The surface is a little dry and textured in areas, possibly due to placement outdoors; in particular to the flowers in the garland, to both the putti's hair, to the leaves at the back of the putto holding a bird, and also to the bird's head and wings. There is some slight veining to the marble, consistent with the material, including a few darker veins running vertically to both sides of the putto with the bird, and to the same putto's cheek on the proper left side, and to the other putto across the top of the flower garland and to his proper right arm. There are some small chips to the edges of the base.

Cesare Lapini had a successful sculpture career in Florence during the second half of the 19th century. After his death, his workshop was turned into the Galleria Lapini which was in operation until at least 1900. The sculptor was celebrated for his genre figures and his charming depictions of children and putti. The present pair is a fine example of the latter, and also shows his skill in achieving different effects in surface texture.  RELATED LITERATURE
